In the United States, it is customary for Social Security to pay one check per month. However, it should be noted that some Social Security beneficiaries may receive more than one check per month on occasion.
This situation is a total irregularity with the Social Security Administration, but it is possible. When you receive two monthly checks from the SSA it is good to know the reason. If we know exactly why we have two checks in a month we can make a better organization in the household economy. The main reasons why a Social Security user may receive two checks in the same month are these.
Reasons Social Security sends two checks in the same month
Some of these reasons are more obvious than others. What’s more, some reasons are right on the Social Security payment schedule, so they shouldn’t be a surprise.
- Collecting SSI and Social Security. When we collect the Supplemental Security Income payment and the retirement pension check we are going to get two checks. Only a portion of retirees can receive this payment, so you may be able to receive it. It doesn’t matter if the retirement is for age or disability.
- There is something peculiar about the calendar. Sometimes there are holidays that change the SSA calendar a bit. So, when the 1st day is a weekend or holiday, the Supplemental Security Income check is sent on the immediately preceding business day.
- You have overdue collections. This situation is rare, but it can happen. If the Social Security Administration did not send you a payment on time, you are entitled to receive it. Therefore, you may receive a second pension check within a month.
With this information, you can rest assured that you will receive a second SSA check. However, if you feel that you have received a check that does not belong to you, it is best to contact your local office to resolve your problem.
Don’t forget that Social Security payments are made on the second, third and fourth Wednesday of the month. These are payments related to age or disability retirement. In the case of Supplemental Security Income, the payment is always sent on the 1st of the month, with the exceptions mentioned above.
Next December, the payment of pensions will be made on the 14th, 21st and 28th. On the first of these days, retirees born between the 1st and 10th will receive Social Security payments. On the 21st, those born between the 11th and 20th will do the same. Finally, on December 28th, Social Security will be paid to those born between the 21st and 31st. The month of birth is not important for collecting these checks, only the day of the month.
