Unemployment payments may be essential at a certain moment in workers’ lives. There could be people who never have to apply for them, while others may need to make use of them more than once.

In order to claim unemployment insurance there are several requirements you need to meet. The first and most important one is the fact that workers lost their job but it was no fault of their own.

In this way, they may be able to qualify to get unemployment benefits. This could be a great opportunity to make a career change, get some training, or look for a job with better working conditions.

Which are the states that pay the least in unemployment insurance in the USA in 2023?

The state that pays the least money on unemployment benefits is Mississippi according to Savings to Invest. The amount beneficiaries could get is just 235 dollars per week maximum for up to 26 weeks. Not far from that amount are Alabama, Florida -12 weeks only-, Louisiana, and Tennessee with just $275.

Therefore, those unemployed workers claiming this insurance may not have enough money to get by. According to Statista, the unemployment rate in January 2023 was just 3,4%.

So, fewer people will need to claim it and they will be able to find a new job faster than at other moments in U.S. history. Unlike these states, others have decided to pay much more than that for unemployment insurance.

Which states pay the highest amounts?

On top of the list, you can find Massachussets. Not only will the unemployed receive the highest unemployment insurance, but they could claim $25 per dependent. They could get up to $1,051 per week. Apart from this, they could take advantage of it for up to 30 weeks.

Other states like Washington, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Hawaii have high amounts too. They could collect up to $999 in Washington. Those in Minnesota could receive as much as 857 dollars. If you live and work in New Jersey 830 dollars is the maximum amount per week for your unemployment benefit. While those living and working in Hawaii could get up to $765 dollars.

As you can see, there is a big difference between some places and others. It is true that the personal situation each unemployed person has is important. Some people might have more expenses than others depending on the area they live. Those living in rural areas may have different prices than those living in a big city. Besides, some might have mortgages while others do not.
