In the United States, American citizens receive two Social Security payments every month. It is true that not all Americans receive these payments, since you need certain requirements to get them. The first of these payments is the Supplemental Security Income, which is always paid on the 1st of each month, with some exceptions. On the other hand, there are also the Social Security pension payments.
To get the first named Social Security benefit you need to have a very low source of income. In addition, it is also mandatory to be part of the Social Security pensioners. On the other hand, to receive the retirement pension it is mandatory to be 61 years old and, in addition, to have worked for at least 10 years. These conditions are not exactly the same for people with disabilities. These are the two main payments that the SSA makes every month.
Social Security Payments
In this regard, the SSI payment is made by Social Security on the 1st of each month. As we said before, this payment is only for pensioners with a low source of income. The day of payment, on the other hand, may change from month to month. This is due to the day of the week that is the 1st of the month. If the 1st of the month falls on a weekend or holiday, recipients of this benefit do not receive the payment on that day. Instead, the Social Security Administration sends the money on the immediately preceding business day.
For this reason, there is one less payment in January. January 1st is a public holiday. Specifically, 1 is a Sunday, so on Friday, December 30, Social Security sends this benefit to its recipients. With the rest of the payments there is no problem and they will be sent according to the usual schedule. Keep an eye on the days on which the SSA sends the pension payments.
Pensions in January
Although there is one less payment in the January calendar, Social Security sends all payments in the same manner as usual. Therefore, the payment days for retirement and disability pensions are as follows:
- January 11: First benefit payment day. Beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th of the month are paid on this day.
- January 18th: The Social Security Administration sends the payment to those born between the 11th and 20th of the month.
- January 25: Third and final payment of the month. This is the fourth Wednesday in January. Accepted pension beneficiaries born between the 21st and 31st of the month may be paid on this day.
