Social Security payments reach United States households on the second, third or fourth Wednesday of each month. All retirees receive their check without any problems, but sometimes there may be some delays in receiving their retirement payments. These delays can be due to a variety of factors and result in people not getting their money on time. Even so, before claiming anything it is important to be clear about several factors.
The first of these factors is that it is mandatory to have a previously accepted benefit if we want to receive it every month. Social Security may notify us that we will receive a benefit, but sometimes it may be the following month. This means that we could be waiting for a benefit that is not yet fully accepted.
On this basis, we can conclude that the Social Security Administration will always send us a check, but we must be patient at times. As a general rule, it is not necessary to do anything to receive the check, but if we see that there is a delay then we must act to receive the benefit money as soon as possible.
Reasons for Social Security or SSDI delays
There are several reasons why we may not have received our Social Security or SSDI benefit on January 18, 2023:
- It may not be our collection day. The days to collect the SSDI or age retirement benefit are the second, third and fourth Wednesday of the month. Each retiree will receive his or her check on a different day depending on his or her day of birth. We should check the calendar well before claiming payment, as today may not be our collection day.
- We do not have the benefit accepted. Remember that in order to receive the payment from Social Security it is mandatory to have the benefit accepted. Sometimes we find that the benefit is still being processed, so in that case we must wait until the following month.
- Our information is not up to date. Through My Social Security we must have all our information updated. Otherwise, we can have problems. If we move, get married or get divorced we must update that information.
- The Bank has withheld the money. As with My Social Security information, the bank can hold the money if there is any erroneous information, so we should always update all information with both the bank and SSA.
Those four reasons are the main reasons why our SSA or SSDI check is late. The Social Security Administration always sends checks on time, with minor exceptions, as long as everything is in order.
How to claim the January 18 payment from the SSA?
To claim this payment from the SSA what we must do is contact them directly. To do this we have two options:
- Through the online portal.
- By telephone. 1 (800) 772-1213.
Each of the methods is equally useful, although sometimes we will have to go in person to talk to a worker in the office. That’s why it’s good to know which office is closest to you.
In addition to all this, remember that if you use the Direct Deposit method to collect your Social Security benefit, you can have the money immediately.
