The Social Security Disability Benefit is a type of financial help that United States citizens can get on a monthly basis. In some cases, these payments are for people who have a disability from birth. However, sometimes it can be a benefit for citizens who have suffered a work-related accident and are unable to work for a period of time.
Each of the specifications has different conditions. Therefore, there are several different disability checks. And in some cases we can get Social Security while working and in other cases we cannot. Although it is true that it all depends on each individual case. There is a general rule, but as each case is totally individual, the Administration considers each citizen in a special way.
The usual thing is to be able to work at the same time that we collect the check for disability, but there are several limitations in this respect. It is not possible to exceed a limited dollar amount and each citizen must look at his or her own case. The same is true for Social Security retirement benefits, although those cases are a little different.
If we have Supplemental Security Income and SSDI at the same time, we may also be able to work. The Disability check is not incompatible with work, although there are different cases. In general, we will be able to use these checks at the same time, but if our wages are too high, we will lose our benefits.
HOW CAN I COLLECT DISABILITY BENEFIT AND WORK AT THE SAME TIME?
The best way to determine our exact case is to go to a Social Security office and explain our situation. If we do this, we can give the workers a chance to tell us if we will lose our disability check or not.
What is certain is that if we have a disability due to a work accident, we cannot work at the same job and collect a Social Security check at the same time. Even so, each case is individual, as we have already mentioned, so we must study our case in detail.
As far as Supplemental Security Income is concerned, the situation is the same. We can collect the Disability benefit at the same time as SSI, but if we work we cannot exceed the maximum income threshold.
CAN I COLLECT SOCIAL SECURITY AND SSDI AT THE SAME TIME?
This is another important question for many Americans. And the answer is no, this is not possible. Because the SSDI (or disability benefit) and the old age retirement benefit are the same thing, it is not possible to collect both at the same time.
Working and collecting either SSDI or retirement is possible, but collecting these two benefits at the same time is not compatible. However, we can combine Supplemental Security Income with some of these two checks.
As soon as we reach retirement age, we can exchange the Disability Benefit for Social Security retirement. The process is automatic and we will get the bigger check of the two. So we don’t have to worry about it.
