A new Social Security check for United States retirees age 65 is on the way. And that check will have the advantage that it will feature an average of $59 more over last year’s checks. And that’s because the 2024 COLA has increased all benefits so that each beneficiary will get a new payment with a new amount.
And for some the first of the 2024 Social Security checks has not yet arrived, so this will be the first payment of the year. And this payment doesn’t have to have $59 added to it, but some growth over last year’s checks will be coming. Each retiree gets a different increase since it is a percentage.
This year’s COLA is 3.2%, so your benefit will increase by that percentage starting with the January 2024 payment. And it doesn’t matter what group of retirees you belong to. Both disability and non-disability retirees are eligible for the Social Security increase. This increase is global and it is not possible for one group of retirees not to get this money. Do you know how much you will get in your January retirement benefit yet?
When do retirees age 65 receive Social Security?
Like all other retirees, 65-year-olds with a Social Security check must get their benefit on one of the four days the government sends it. In January, there are no exceptions to the mailing of the payment, so we are able to get the check without any problems.
The full schedule of these payments includes January 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th. On each of these days the beneficiaries get a check with the established amount. Just by having your Social Security check accepted, you will be in one of these groups. Beneficiaries who get a monthly benefit will get it in January on one of the days named according to the group to which they belong.
These are the full calendar days for January 2024:
- January 3rd. Social Security payment for pre-1997 retirees.
- January 10th. Post-1997 Social Security retirees with birthdays between the 1st and 10th get paid on this day.
- January 17th. Beneficiaries with a post-1997 check and a birthday between the 11th and 20th get paid on this day.
- January 24th. The last payment day of the month is for post-1997 retirees with birthdays between the 21st and 31st of the month.
If your payment day has already passed, you should claim your benefit as soon as possible. The Social Security payment arrives on the same day it is sent if we have Direct Deposit activated and a few days later if we do not have this payment method activated.
For this reason, if we do not have the money available a week later, it is time to claim the payment. The first thing to do is to contact our bank. They should know what is happening with our money. If the bank cannot offer us help, then we will have to contact the Social Security Administration as soon as possible. Once we do this we should have all the problems in this regard solved and we should cash our check as soon as possible.
After the payment on the 24th of January we will have to wait until February, where there are some changes in the calendar. Even so, it is still some time before the Social Security Administration sends those checks, so we must first wait to get payment for the month of January.
