A little over a month ago, the tax season for the IRS began in the United States. This means that taxpayers can now send their tax returns to the IRS and contribute to the country as a whole. The date the campaign started was January 23rd. This means that any citizen who is waiting to send in their return can now do so, so there is no time to lose.
However, taxpaying citizens still have time to send their tax returns to the IRS. In total, the campaign lasts three months, with a closing date of April 18. For some Americans this is more than enough time, but other citizens may need more time. There are special cases, where the IRS has extended the time to send the tax return for several reasons.
In this sense, some counties in California, as well as in other states, have until October to be able to file their tax return. What not all citizens know is that this extension in the tax season could be available to all taxpayers. It is also worth mentioning that the IRS does not grant this extension to 100% of the users who request it.
How do I request a tax return extension from the IRS?
In order to request a tax season extension from the IRS and get more time to send our tax return to the IRS we will need to access the IRS website. However, before proceeding, it is important to note that:
- An extension of time to file your return does not grant you any extension of time to pay your taxes.
- You should estimate and pay any owed taxes by your regular deadline to help avoid possible penalties.
- You must file your extension request no later than the regular due date of your return.

Within the IRS website there are several forms that can be filled out to request the extension of time. If it is for an individual or for a business, the form is different. An individual person will have to complete form 4868. On the other hand, a company has to complete form 7004 or form 1138, depending on several factors.
Until when is the tax season extended?
We can extend the tax season until the 15th of October of this year. The IRS allows a small group of taxpayers to submit their tax filings until that time. However, it is not a good idea to keep in mind that the IRS will grant us this extension.
If you are having trouble understanding all the necessary tax filing documentation, ask for help. The IRS itself has several help channels, such as FreeFile. We could also hire an advisor, always making sure that he/she is official and not trying to scam us.
