The Social Security Administration’s payment schedule is usually on time. This is not to say that one hundred percent of retirees in the United States receive their check on time every month. While it is true that the general rule is that Americans are able to enjoy their benefit without delay, there are sometimes exceptions. The important thing in these cases is to stay on top of the situation and not let our Social Security payment arrive too late.
In the case of not receiving the payment on time we will always be able to claim our benefit. Doing this is really simple and there are two main ways to claim our overdue payment. If we keep all of this in mind, it is possible that our Social Security check will never arrive too late again. This is even more important if we think that for some retirees this payment is the only source of income.
So check first on what day you are due to receive your payment and then see if you should claim it or not. This is of real importance, because if we do not know on which day we have to collect the benefit we cannot claim our payment from Social Security. Therefore, look carefully at the collection calendar and check on which day the Administration will send you your check.
Social Security payment schedule
There are 4 different payment days on the regular calendar. Each of these days may vary slightly in each new month, but we have a stable calendar base which is as follows:
- 3rd day of the month. This day is for retirees prior to 1997. When the day is a holiday or weekend, payment is sent on the immediately preceding business day.
- Post-1997 retirees:
- Second Wednesday of the month. Social Security Payment for retirees born between the 1st and 10th.
- Third Wednesday of the month. Beneficiaries with birthdays between the 11th and 20th of the month are paid on this day.
- Fourth Wednesday of the month. Pensioners with birthdays between the 21st and 31st of the month receive their payment on this day.
Each month, the second, third and fourth Wednesdays fall on a different number. In June, for example, these days are the 14th, 21st and 28th. But it’s not the number on the day that matters, it’s the day as such. So you could receive payment on one of these Wednesdays.
How to claim the retirement payment?
Now that you have the schedule of Social Security payments clear let’s look at how to claim these late payments. The first thing to keep in mind is that the Administration sends the checks on time, with very minor exceptions. In this sense, the delay is usually due to the banks.
If we want to claim the late payment we must first contact our bank. Sometimes the bank may withhold money for various reasons. If we have a debt with them or our information is not up to date, they can withhold the money. So before we talk to the Social Security Administration we should complain to our bank.
In the event that the bank does not help us, it is time to contact the Social Security Administration. To do this we can do it through a phone call or by going to one of the offices. They will be able to help you and find a solution to your problem.
