Social Security beneficiaries want to know if they could get a Disability Benefit as well

Getting one of the Social Security payments each month is key to the finances of many United States households. Some citizens do not get money from any other source of income, so having a monthly check is vital to be able to pay bills and regular expenses. However, in some cases the checks are too small to be able to meet all household expenses.

For that reason, many citizens wonder if it is possible to collect not only the Social Security retirement check, but also the Social Security Disability payment. Getting more than one check from the SSA is a relief for the beneficiaries’ pockets, so being able to do so can become essential for these types of beneficiaries.

Can I get Social Security and Disability payments?

In order to better understand the situation with regard to the Disability payment and the Social Security retirement payment and whether or not we can combine them or not we are going to have to know what the two kinds of benefits are.

And the first thing we have to keep in mind is that both benefits are actually a retirement check. And this means that it is not possible to combine the two benefits. By having an Age Retirement we will not be able to get a Disability payment and vice versa.

It is only possible to collect one of these two possible checks. So if we have too small a Social Security retirement payment we may have to check other kinds of fringe benefits that we can apply for and see if we are eligible to get them.

Social Security Supplemental Benefits

Social Security checks have a maximum payment of $4,873 for the Age Retirement payment. If we have a Disability check, the payment can be up to $3,822. Both of these maximum checks are very good amounts, but we can’t always get a check that high.

Those Americans who have a lower check can check to see if they are eligible to get Supplemental Security Income. This type of benefit provides up to $943 to the neediest Americans. Of course, we have to meet some mandatory requirements in order to get this extra monthly check.

In addition to having a disability or having reached the age of 65, it is necessary to demonstrate that our income is very low. This is the only way the Social Security Administration can grant us this monthly check. Even so, it is not mandatory to be retired to be eligible for this payment, so those who have obtained retirement but meet both requirements can apply for the payment without any problems.
