Citizens of the United States can get different benefits from the Social Security Administration and one of these benefits is the disability payment. However, not all Americans can have access to this payment, and it is mandatory to meet certain requirements. And we are not only talking about requirements related to disability as such, but also to other aspects.
In order to be eligible for one of these monthly SSDI checks, it is mandatory to have worked for a certain number of years. If we do not reach a minimum number of years worked, the Social Security Administration will not send us a payment every month. Even so, each case is completely individual and the Administration will consider all applications, but it is common for us to be required to work for a period of time before applying.
While it is true that it is not necessary to have worked for a minimum of 10 years in all disability cases, as is the case with old age retirement, the beneficiary who wants an SSDI check will have to have worked in recent years. It is not possible, for most cases, to obtain a disability benefit without having worked in the years prior to application.
Not only that, but it is also necessary to have worked a specific number of years. Each case is individual and, therefore, the Social Security Administration will consider it on that basis. Similarly, the amount of the check will also change depending on these characteristics.
HOW MANY YEARS DO I HAVE TO WORK TO GET SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY BENEFIT (SSDI)?
In order to get a Social Security disability benefit, you must have worked for at least a minimum number of years. In addition, you must be working under Social Security and contributing as long as possible.
Even so, each situation is totally different. There are citizens who have a disability from birth that prevents them from working. But in the case that we have worked before applying for Social Security we must take into account that there are certain requirements. In this case, we find that we must have worked previously.
If you are 24 years old, you must have earned 6 work credits in the last 3 years. On the other hand, if our age is between 24 and 31 years old, it is necessary to have worked half of the time between 21 years old and the age at which you ask for the disability check.
Finally, if you are older than 31, you must have earned a minimum of 20 credits in the last 10 years before the disability. In any case, each case is totally unique, so it is possible that we can apply for the check without meeting all these requirements.
