Every year the Social Security Administration provides new disability benefits to United States citizens. These benefits are of great help because they allow these citizens to obtain a large enough amount of money to be able to live their lives while they are unable to work.
Within the disability classification there are several distinctions. Even so, the ultimate goal of any benefit of this type is the same. So if you think you might apply for a disability benefit you should check the requirements well in advance. Since every citizen is different in this regard, we should watch out very carefully whether we are really entitled to this type of payment from Social Security or not.
Once the disability benefit has been accepted, it will be paid on a monthly basis. The duration of the benefit will depend on the rules set by Social Security in each particular case. Sometimes it may be a lifetime benefit and sometimes it may be temporary. Also, the monthly amount of the check also changes a lot and the current maximum is $3,627 per month.
Eligibility for the disability benefit in July 2023
Unlike the Social Security age benefit, the disability benefit can be claimed before age 62. This is the major difference between these two benefits. Still, this type of check has its own characteristics.
In order to apply for this disability benefit we must meet the following requirements:
- To have participated in a job covered by Social Security. In other words, we must have worked legally and paid taxes.
- Have a medical condition that falls within the category of disability according to the Social Security Administration. As each citizen is totally different in this aspect, the Administration must verify that the situation is really that one.
Fulfilling these two requirements we will be able to apply for the Social Security disability check. For more details, the Social Security website provides a list of reasons why Social Security may grant this type of benefit.
When does the Social Security Administration send these checks?
Social Security disability retirement checks always arrive on four different days of the month. If our benefit is pre-1997, the payment is usually on the 3rd day of the month. However, there are times when the Administration pays this check on a different day. When the 3rd day is a holiday or a weekend, the check reaches citizens on the immediately preceding business day.
After that payment, the Administration pays post-1997 retirees on three different days. This is the second, third and fourth Wednesday of the month. On each of these days a different group of Americans can receive their disability benefit.
The second Wednesday of the month is for beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th of the month. The third Wednesday of the month is for disability retirees with birthdays between the 11th and 20th. Finally, the fourth Wednesday of the month is for citizens with birthdays between the 21st and 31st of any month.
