On December 1, eligible recipients will receive their first Supplemental Security Income check of $841. On December 30, they will receive their second check, averaging $914, since January 1, 2023 is a holiday.

Put another way, the second payment on December 30 is an advance payment for January 2023, as it reflects the new SSI benefit amount for the new year. When this occurs, the Social Security Administration (SSA) sends checks on the nearest business day.

Recipients will see their amount increase to $914 from the $841 they receive now.

Who is eligible for SSI?

The Supplemental Security Income program provides financial assistance to needy individuals over age 65, blind or disabled adults, and blind or disabled children.

The eligibility requirements and federal payment rules are the same. Anyone can apply for SSI, but not everyone gets the same amount.

You may get more if you live in a state that adds money to the federal SSI payment.

You may get less if you have other income, such as wages, pensions, or Social Security benefits. You may also get less if someone else pays for your household or if you live with your spouse and your spouse has income.

SSI Amounts for 2023

In December 2022, SSI recipients will receive a check that will increase to reflect the 8.7% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) by 2023.

COLA is designed to compensate for inflation and, depending on how high it is, determines how much people receive from their Social Security payment.
