In the schedule of Social Security payments for the month of February, we have seen an irregularity. And that is that United States citizens with a post-1997 retirement benefit have had to wait a little longer than usual.
Even so, it is true that the Social Security payment schedule follows the same pattern, but there is something a little different. Since the month started on a Thursday, payments for post-1997 retirees didn’t start arriving until the third week.
And this has caused many Americans to enter the last week of February without getting a Social Security payment. So take a good look to see if you are on the list of eligible beneficiaries to get this new retirement payment.
Who gets the next Social Security payment?
The payment day for this benefit will be on February 28th. As we have commented, this will be the last payment of the month. But we must keep in mind that we are in the last week of February, so this group of retirees has had to wait quite a while.
In order to get this benefit we must keep in mind that:
- You have to have had our Social Security retirement check since after 1997 (specifically, as of May of that year).
- You must have your birthday between the 21st and 31st of any given month. It does not matter the month of birth or the year, only the day.
This is the only way to get the payment on the 28th of February. To tell the truth, the payment apparently arrives a little later than usual, but it is still on the fourth Wednesday of the month, as is customary for this group.
The advantage is that if we have Supplemental Security Income we can get two payments in the same week. Two days after this check is mailed, the Social Security Administration will send this other extra payment.
So if we have the retirement benefit and Supplemental Security Income we could get around $943 on the one hand and a maximum of $4,873 on the other. The amounts do not affect the day of collection, so it will not matter whether we earn more or less money on our Social Security benefit.
