Each new month the Social Security Administration sends eligible United States citizens a Supplemental Security Income check. Also, throughout the year there are many citizens who also receive so-called stimulus checks. This other type of payment is related to various eligibility requirements. Therefore, in order to receive the usual stimulus check, several conditions must be met.
In most cases, Americans who apply for stimulus check can collect Supplemental Security Income and vice versa. However, one must always keep in mind that there are certain eligibility criteria for both checks. If we do not meet those conditions we will lose one of the checks and sometimes even both payments.
So before we apply for either payment we should keep this in mind. Receiving Supplemental Security Income every 1st of the month, with some exceptions, is possible for only a limited number of Americans. Similarly, the so-called stimulus checks are also only for a specific group of Americans. Do you receive two of these checks? Then pay attention to these recommendations.
CAN I RECEIVE SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME AND STIMULUS CHECKS AT THE SAME TIME?
The short answer is yes, of course. The long answer is yes, of course, but watch out. As soon as we start collecting a new benefit at the same time as Supplemental Security Income we must watch out for total income. If we have more income than the maximum SSI benefit, we could lose SSI.
This means that when we start collecting a stimulus check we must calculate our total monthly income. Even so, there are some stimulus checks that do not count against Supplemental Security Income.
To find out for sure, the best thing to do is to ask the agency that sends the checks. You can also contact the Social Security Administration as soon as you start collecting a stimulus check. They will be able to tell us directly if the extra payment affects the monthly Supplemental Security Income.
WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM SSI AMOUNT?
Supplemental Security Income checks can be up to $914 per month. The amount you receive in each of these checks depends on your monthly income as well as your overall financial resources.
For that reason, a citizen who has a very high Social Security benefit will not be eligible for this check. Likewise, thousands of Americans who could apply for SSI do not do so because they do not know they are eligible.
As mentioned above, most stimulus checks do not affect the Supplemental Security Income check. So if you receive both of these benefits, you’re probably not in trouble. But it is best to check to avoid unpleasant surprises in your benefits.
