The United States Social Security disability payment schedule follows a fixed schedule that is announced before the beginning of each year. In this sense, any American can easily find out on which day in January 2024 he can receive his benefit, as well as on which day in February or even in May. Thanks to this calendar, retirees can easily organize their finances.
And this is not just for disabled beneficiaries. Every other citizen who receives a Social Security retirement check will have access to this type of calendar. And the ultimate goal of this is nothing less than to make life as easy as possible for this group of United States citizens with lower-than-usual incomes.
So once you know what day of the month you can get a check, the other question you can ask yourself is whether you can change when you get your disability payment. Unfortunately, you cannot, and the reason is simple. Once we see what the requirements are to get the payment on each of these days, we can know why we will not be able to get the payment on a different day.
Why can’t I change my Social Security Disability payment date?
The reason we cannot change the day we get our monthly Social Security Disability payment is because the schedule is based on our personal information. This means that if our check arrives on a certain day, it will arrive on that day because it is scheduled in advance. The Administration does not send out checks at random, but on a set schedule.
Sometimes there are exceptions, but the general rule for Social Security payments is as follows
- Retirees before 1997. You will receive your payment on the 3rd day of each month. If that day is a holiday or a workday, payment is made on the immediately preceding workday.
- Disability beneficiaries after 1997. You will receive your payment on three different days of the month, depending on your birthday.
- Retirees with birthdays between the 1st and 10th of the month. The second Wednesday of the month.
- Retirees with birthdays between the 11th and 20th. Receive payment on the third Wednesday of the month.
- Retirees with birthdays between the 21st and 31st. You receive your disability benefit on the fourth Wednesday of the month.
It is unusual for a Wednesday to be a holiday, but it can happen. If it is, the payment is mailed on the immediately preceding business day, which is usually the Tuesday of the same week.
Since payments are based on birthday and year of retirement, it is not possible to change the day of payment. But it is possible to organize our finances around this information. And if we know we will receive a check on the third Wednesday of each month, we should save money until then.
By organizing our finances, we can easily solve the financial problems of a United States citizen who receives only disability benefits. Although this is not recommended, it is common, so we must keep all aspects in mind. Also remember that you can apply for both Supplemental Security Income and SNAP food stamps. These two checks can help us to have a better standard of living.
