The United States Social Security Administration doesn’t just send retirement checks to Americans. In addition to that, there are other different payments that may come at different times of the month. The one thing to keep in mind at all times is that these payments are not for all Americans.
Getting each of the Social Security checks depends on whether or not we meet certain requirements. Best of all, if we meet all the requirements for the two main checks, we will get two different payments each month. One of these payments amounts to $4,873 and the other one amounts to $943 per month. This second check is the one that will arrive in the next few hours.
How to get the extra $550 Social Security check?
There is nothing more useful for a Social Security beneficiary than getting an extra payment of $550 per month. And it is possible to get this extra payment every month if you meet the requirements. Of course, the next payment of this benefit will be on May 31st, but it is not usual for this payment to get the money on this day.
The usual for this check, whose name is Supplemental Security Income, is that the collection day is the 1st of each month. But since the 1st of June is a weekend, the Administration sends the payment on the immediately preceding business day. And that is why we have an extra payment in the month of May. So you can’t get the payment in June, since you’ll have it available in May.
Social Security SSI Eligibility Requirements
In order to have this monthly benefit it is true that we need to meet several requirements. And among those requirements we do not find ourselves being retired. Also, we would not be able to get the May 31st payment if we have not yet applied for SSI or if the payment is in the process of being accepted.
In the event that we want to get this monthly check from Social Security we will need to:
- Be 65 or older or have a disability.
- Have low resources and low monthly income.
With only that we can already have SSI check if we apply for it in advance. The maximum payment is $943, although the average is usually in the $550 range. If the Social Security Administration accepts our application, we will get each payment on the 1st of the month, with some exceptions.
