Employment from an earlier age is now possible in Arkansas. There are other states where working at the age of 14 or 15 is already possible. So, it does not seem to be something new in the USA. The Fair Labor Standards Act or FLSA set the minimum age to get employment that is non-agricultural at the age of 14. Besides, it is not allowed for any under-18 to work in a place where hazardous situations take place.
On the one hand, some American citizens believe that it is good for teenagers to learn that work is essential to survive. Earning money is key to be able to buy everything and pay other expenses and services. In this way, they believe 14- or 15-year-olds will be more responsible and mature. So, they claim employment could be advantageous. There are many jobs that hire young people part-time. For example, delivering newspapers is probably the one that comes to mind straight away.
What is the aim of this bill that allows 14-year-olds to find employment in Arkansas?
The main aim is to make it possible to work as well as easier. Of course, if you do not want to work at that age, it is not compulsory. But you have the freedom to do it if you a willing to do so. What is more, it provides teenagers in the state of Arkansas the same opportunity that those youths in Texas, Colorado, or Arizona have. To get part-time employment you must have a special permit at that age in many states.
There is a limit to the number of hours they can work though. So, they will be able to work for only the time that is legal. Some people believe that teenagers could spend less time using social media and make something productive. So they believe it will be beneficial for teens, families, and society in general. Other believe that this could be a way to leave school and their studies.
What might be a reason for this bill’s approval?
The lack of people who are available for work could be another key reason. Employment opportunities are increasing since there is a low unemployment rate in most parts of the USA. This labor shortage could be great for those 14 to 15 years old who are looking forward to getting a new job. Another thing they could benefit from is the fact that wages may be higher now. As there are not many workers, employers may want to pay more to attract employees. A few years ago, this was not possible and wages were lower for many jobs.
The tuition fees are becoming very expensive at colleges, not to mention dormitories, so many teens want to start saving early to be able to cope with it and help their families. If saving becomes a habit, they could enjoy a better retirement. Paying taxes from an early age and saving could also allow them to have a brighter future. Whatever their reasons to find employment might be, they have the right to do so now.
