SSI stands for the Supplemental Security Income. The main aim of this program is to give money to those whose income and resources are not enough to make ends meet.
In general, SSI payments are for people who have no access to retirement benefits or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). Even if you collect SSDI or retirement checks, you may be eligible for the Supplemental Security Income.
The Social Security Administration informed that SSI payments are generally due on the first day of every month. What is more, there will be only 12 checks per year.
ARE THERE ANY EXCEPTIONS TO THE SSI PAYDAYS?
Although Social Security normally sends SSI payments on the first day of the month, there might be some exceptions during the year. For example, there are 4 cases when there is no Supplemental Security Income check on the first day of the month.
During the months of January, April, July, and October there is no SSI payday on the SSA payment schedule. The reason why Social Security sends no Supplemental Security Income check in these months is the fact that the first day of the month is either a holiday or a weekend.
So as to avoid sending money on a holiday or on a Saturday or Sunday, SSA prefers to do it on a business day. By doing so, they may send two checks during the same month.
THERE ARE 12 SOCIAL SECURITY OR SSI PAYMENTS EVERY YEAR
Anyway, you are just getting your monthly payment two or three days in advance. What is more, you are not receiving any additional SSI payments. In total, you will always receive 12 payments per year.
The bad thing about payments in advance is the fact that you may spend the money faster. Especially if you are on a limited budget. So stick to your monthly budget plan and do not make use of the cash unless it is necessary.
Actually, it will not take long before you receive two Supplemental Security Income checks during the same month. And then, no check the following month. This December, there will be an SSI check on the first and on the 29th. So, there will be no payment during the month of January since it will arrive beforehand.
If you know someone who has a low income, tell them about the Supplemental Security Income or even SNAP benefits. With extra cash from both programs, they may be able to make ends meet.
As for the amounts of the Supplemental Security Income, they can be up to $914 if you are single in 2023. Thanks to the latest Social Security Cost of Living Adjustment (2024 COLA), the new amount will be $943 in 2024.
Eligible married couples may cash up to $1,371 in 2023 or up to $1,415 in 2024. Therefore, it could be the boost you need for your financial situation. Even essential persons can claim Supplemental Security Income payments.
SSI for essential persons
The only disadvantage for them is the fact that payments are smaller. But still, $458 in 2023 is better than nothing. In 2024, the COLA increase will turn it into 472 dollars. Some of the requirements to cash them is to be 65 years old, have a disability, or be blind.
