The Social Security Administration sends different checks every month to retirees in the United States. Among these checks is the Supplemental Security Income check. While this check is not just for retirees, Social Security beneficiaries can apply for it and enjoy it, as long as they meet the requirements.
As with all Social Security payments, Supplemental Security Income has a maximum amount. Ultimately, the SSI payment is to help people pay their bills. For that reason, the Federal Government cannot send an unlimited amount of dollars per month. In that case in a few years it would become an unsustainable situation.
What is certain is that we can find ourselves with a check to help us pay our monthly bills. Best of all, Supplemental Security Income recipients do not have to justify what they spend the benefit money on. They usually spend it on bills, rent or food, so with the maximum amount, we have enough money to pay for a lot of those expenses.
Maximum Supplemental Security Income amount in 2023
When applying for a Supplemental Security Income check, we will have to declare our income. And based on that same monthly income, we will be able to access a higher or lower check. In addition to that, there are some requirements to meet. Not all Americans can apply for this benefit.
The maximum Supplemental Security Income payment in 2023 is $914 per month. With this amount of money we can do a lot of things per month. So in the case of having this benefit accepted our economy will be a little better. But remember that we need to fulfill some requirements if we want to get check.
Requirements to get Social Security SSI
The requirements we have to meet in order for the Social Security Administration to send us our Supplemental Security Income check every month are mainly two:
- Be age 65 or older or have a disability.
- Low income and low resources.
To prove the latter, you must file your taxes on time and declare all of your monthly income. This benefit can be combined with your monthly Social Security check, but you do not have to collect retirement income to get Supplemental Security Income.
When does Supplemental Security Income arrive?
The SSI check arrives every month on the 1st of the month, with some exceptions. Recipients of this check always receive their benefits on the same day. Unlike Social Security checks, all recipients receive Supplemental Security Income at the same time.
However, the Social Security Administration does not send SSI every month on the 1st. When the 1st is a weekend or holiday, the Administration sends this check on the immediately preceding business day.
And because of this irregularity in the calendar, some citizens may receive up to 3 checks from the Administration in the same month. It is not that they have more money in the total of checks, but they do get some of them in advance.
