Within the benefits that SSDI users can receive as a United States citizen there is more than one different check. It is well known to all Americans that the SSDI payment is monthly and is only for disability users. This is true, but there is one more payment that the Social Security Administration sends to some of these retirees.
The reasons we can get a Social Security pension are many and varied. The most common are the disability payment (SSDI) and the age retirement payment. These two checks are unique and beneficiaries receive them only once a month, with very minor exceptions.
However, in addition to the SSDI check, retirees may receive a separate check. And this check is both for disability users and for another group of beneficiaries who meet certain conditions. Still, it is important to keep in mind that this other benefit is not as large as the SSDI check and should not be counted on to pay all the bills.
For that reason, all expert economists always advise not only to have an alternative source of income, but also some money saved. Anyway, it is very important to know what are the benefits that a person with SSDI can get, as many of the users with disabilities will be able to get a great benefit from them.
These are the different benefits an SSDI user can get
The different benefits that a SSDI user can have are two. In total it would be 2 monthly checks, although sometimes it could be three, it all depends on the calendar. If there is an irregularity in the calendar, the disability retiree may get 3 different checks. However, this is not the most common, plus it does not involve extra money, but rather collecting the same amount on different days.
The two payments an SSDI user can get are the disability payment and the Supplemental Security Income. Each payment has a different amount and it all depends on the individual’s general background. In order to find out exactly what the SSDI payment is, we need to use the Social Security calculator to help us determine how much money we will receive each month.
When does Social Security pay disability benefits?
The Social Security Administration’s payment schedule for sending SSDI money depends on the month’s own calendar. Checks arrive to retirees on the following days:
- Second Wednesday of the month. Retirees with birthdays between the 1st and 10th of the month receive their disability benefit on this day.
- Third Wednesday of the month. Pensioners with birthdays between the 11th and 20th of the month get their check on this day of the month.
- Fourth Wednesday of the month. Any retiree with birthdays between the 21st and 31st receive their retirement benefit on this day.
For Supplemental Security Income, payments are on another day. Disability pension payments have these days as usual. It is very rare that there are irregularities in these payments, so you will always receive them on one of the days mentioned above.
In addition, there is no way to receive two of these checks per month. We will only be able to receive one check per retirement in a full month. When we receive that payment, we will have to wait until the following month to receive the payment of the same category.
When does an SSDI retiree receive an SSI payment?
The second payment of the month is SSI. In order to receive this Social Security benefit, two requirements must be met:
- Have a disability or be over 65 years of age. If both requirements are met, there is no extra payment.
- Low income and low resources. The exact specification of this is determined by the Social Security Administration.
As for the date of the check, the Administration sends it to SSDI users or those over age 65 always on the 1st of each month. However, there are also exceptions that may slightly change this rule. If the 1st of a month is a holiday or weekend, the payment is made on the immediately preceding business day.
So any month in which the 1st is a weekend or holiday, the check will arrive on the last business day of the previous month. In the case of March there has been no variation, but there will be in April. April 1st is a weekend, so Social Security will pay this extra SSDI on the 31st of March.
This change in dates means that retirees with this accepted benefit can have up to 3 different checks per month. One check for the disability or retirement benefit and two checks for Supplemental Security Income. Watch out though, as in this case there will not be a new SSI check in April.
How can I find out if I am eligible for SSI?
In order to find out if we can get our SSI check every month, the Social Security Administration has made a very useful APP available to everyone. The tool called BEST Tool will tell us in just a few minutes if we can apply for Supplemental Security Income.
Through this platform, the SSDI user will answer some questions related to his or her personal situation. Then, we will be able to know whether or not we are eligible for this benefit. After that we just have to apply for the check to the Social Security Administration and wait for approval.
