Each month, the Social Security Administration (SSA) processes millions of payments for beneficiaries of its programs. Most of these benefits go to retired workers, as well as people who get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).

To properly organize the issuance of payments, the SSA distributes benefits based on the date of birth of the recipients. Those born between the 1st and 10th of each month get their payment on the second Wednesday of the month. Individuals born between the 11th and 20th get it on the third Wednesday, and those born between the 21st and 31st, on the last Wednesday of the month.

It is important to note that workers who retired before May 1997 and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients do not follow this distribution schedule. SSA sends them their payments during the first days of the month, regardless of their date of birth.

These individuals will get their Social Security payments this Wednesday, September 11

According to SSA’s distribution mechanism and estimation table, the beneficiaries who will get an average payment of $1,900 this Wednesday, September 11, are retirees born between the 1st and 10th of the month. The remaining September payments are distributed as follows:

  • Wednesday, 18: Beneficiaries with birth dates between the 11th and 20th.
  • Wednesday, 25: Beneficiaries with date of birth between the 21st and 31st of the month

It is important to note that this figure is only an approximation, as the exact amount varies according to several factors. For retired employees, the SSA takes into account several elements, such as the years worked, the contributions made to Social Security during that period and the age at which they decide to retire, among other aspects.

How much money do I get from Social Security?

The amount of payments varies from beneficiary to beneficiary; however, the SSA has estimates that provide a broader picture for all individuals seeking to plan for retirement and know in advance the approximate amount of their payments.

By 2024, the average monthly payment for a retired individual is $1,907, while retired couples filing jointly may be due approximately $3,303 per month. The average amount per month for SSI recipients is $943 for individuals and $1,415 for couples.
