Supplemental Security Income recipients will not get a benefit in January 2024

An irregularity in the timing of payments will result in millions of Americans not getting Supplemental Security Income in January 2024

Supplemental Security Income will not arrive in January to some americans

Upcoming payments from the Social Security Administration for United States beneficiaries are already marked on the calendar. And Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is one of those upcoming payments. Whether or not we get it in January will depend on several factors.

If we have an accepted Supplemental Security Income benefit we may not get it in January. But this is not bad news, far from it, because if we don’t get it in January it means we will get it before 2024 arrives.

Also, remember that this payment that pertains to January 2024 will already have this year’s COLA added to it. Therefore, if the 2024 COLA is 3.2% we will find that the payment will have that amount added to it, no matter what check we cashed in this year 2023.

On the one hand, it would be good news to get the payment in January. On the other hand, receiving Supplemental Security Income outside of January means we will get it sooner, so that is also good news. Whatever we do, we will still get the payment, but on different days.

WHO WILL NOT RECEIVE SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME FOR JANUARY 2024?

The Social Security Administration will send out a check for the January 2024 Supplemental Security Income. However, it will not be mailed this month of next year, but will be mailed earlier. The mailing date will be next December 29, 2023. This means that the payment will be sent early.

However, all this does not mean that we will get it sooner or not. In order to get it before we need to activate Direct Deposit. By activating this collection method we will be able to have the payment on the 29th of December, which means that we will receive the check before the usual date.

Therefore, having Direct Deposit means that we will not get any Supplemental Security Income payments in January 2024. But that doesn’t mean we won’t get this check, as we actually do get it, since the December 29th payment is from next year’s January calendar.

WHY NO SOCIAL SECURITY SSI PAYMENT IN JANUARY?

The reason there is no Supplemental Security Income payment in January 2024 is very simple. The payment should have been on the upcoming January 1st, but that day is a holiday. Since the Social Security Administration does not send checks on holidays the payment is sent on the immediately preceding business day.

And to find an earlier business day we have to go to December 29th. For that reason we have earlier check and since it is a 2024 payment we also find the COLA already added.

So the maximum payment of $914 that we were able to get on the 1st of December will become $943 maximum on the 29th of December. Still, any other Supplemental Security Income amount will be increased regardless of whether it is the maximum or not.
