Montana homeowners who paid property taxes in 2023 may qualify for a refund of up to $675. This rebate provides financial relief, but the maximum amount a homeowner can get is capped at $675 or the total amount of property taxes paid, whichever is less.
For example, if a homeowner paid $425 in property taxes, he or she would get a refund equal to that amount. However, if the homeowner paid $1,200, the refund would still be limited to the maximum of $675.
Refunds will be distributed by check, as direct deposit is not available. It is essential that homeowners remain alert to potential scams and rely on official communications from the Montana Department of Revenue for the latest and most accurate information.
Eligibility criteria for tax refunds
To qualify for the rebate, homeowners must meet several criteria. They must have owned and lived in a Montana home, such as a house, apartment or mobile home, for at least seven months in 2023.
In the meantime, they must have been billed and paid property taxes on that principal residence. The rebate only applies to property taxes on the home itself and up to one acre of surrounding land. Only one refund can be claimed per household.
Certain situations make homeowners ineligible for the refund. Properties owned by entities such as LLCs or corporations do not qualify, even if a shareholder or member lived in the home for the required amount of time.
Renters are also not eligible to claim the rebate, as it is only available to homeowners. In addition, homes held in irrevocable trusts do not qualify for this program.
When is the deadline for applications?
The filing period for the 2023 rebate opened on August 15, 2024 and all claims must be submitted by October 1, 2024.
Homeowners who file their claims online can expect their rebate to be processed within 30 days, while paper claims can take up to 90 days.
