Southern United States will experience major climate change affecting thousands of people

Earlier today, Mexico announced a tropical storm warning for the Pacific coast stretching from Altata to Huatabampito and lifted warnings for Baja California Sur following heavy rainfall from Ileana in Los Cabos the previous day.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Ileana was traveling north at a speed of 7 mph (11 kph) across the southern Gulf of California. The center of the storm was approximately 70 miles (110 km) east of La Paz, Mexico, and reported maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph).

On Friday, a tropical storm warning was issued for certain areas of the Baja California peninsula, covering Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

According to Juan Manuel Arce Ortega of Civil Protection in Los Cabos, all municipalities of La Paz and Los Cabos are currently on red alert, and residents are advised to stay away from rivers, streams and low-lying regions that could be dangerous due to rising water levels.

Due to the storm, all schools in Los Cabos canceled classes on Friday.

Oscar Cruces Rodriguez, federal deputy director of communications for Civil Protection, indicated that residents should refrain from leaving their homes until the storm has subsided, and those in flood-prone areas should seek shelter in temporary shelters.

According to Civil Protection in Los Cabos, authorities have established 20 temporary shelters in both San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.

Valet parking at the Hacienda Beach Club and Residences in Cabo San Lucas, Alan Galvan, reported that the rain began Thursday night and has continued steadily. “Currently, the rain is not very heavy, but the sea is a bit choppy,” he said.

He added, “The guests are quite calm, they have already gone down to have their coffee.” Galván mentioned that while some airlines are canceling, everything is proceeding smoothly for now. They are awaiting further updates from the authorities.

On Friday afternoon, rains persisted in Los Cabos. Flooding affected several roads and numerous hotels had sandbags placed around their boundaries. Despite the weather, some people were seen strolling along the docks, protecting themselves with umbrellas.
