Irregularities in the timing of United States Social Security payments are quite common. Every new month means a new payment, but not every month the payment arrives on the same day. It is true that there is a general rule to establish these payments, but sometimes we find some irregularities.
This will happen in September. Next month, citizens receiving Social Security may encounter up to two different irregularities within the payment days. So if you are expecting to receive one of these checks you should know about them to avoid unpleasant surprises.
One of these irregularities is linked to Social Security pensioner payments. The other irregularity is part of the Supplemental Security Income checks. If you receive both benefits, you may receive them on a slightly different day, at least one of them.
You may even find that the two payments arrive on the exact same day for some retirees. Still, pay attention to the September 2023 Social Security calendar for exact days and irregularities.
SOCIAL SECURITY IRREGULARITIES IN AUGUST 2023
Within these irregularities there are two categories. On the one hand, we have the payment related to the age or disability pensioner. On the other hand, we have the Supplemental Security Income payments.
It is not very common to come across up to two irregularities within one month’s calendar, but it is possible, as we can see in September this year. Let’s see exactly what these irregularities are.
SOCIAL SECURITY FOR PRE-1997 RETIREES
The payment of this benefit will arrive on a different day than usual. Pre-1997 retirees are normally paid on the 3rd day of the month, but this will not happen in September 2023. This is because that day is Sunday, so the check will arrive on the immediately preceding business day.
This causes the Social Security Administration to send the check on the 1st of September. Because of this change, the Administration will send two separate checks on the same day. In other words, the September Supplemental Security Income and the pre-1997 pensioner’s pension will arrive on the same day.
SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME
The Supplemental Security Income payment is always made on the 1st of each month, with some exceptions. There is no problem with the September payment itself. The 1st is Friday, which means that SSI recipients can have the payment on the same day.
However, we find that the 1st of October is a Sunday. This causes the payment for that month to arrive early. So on September 29th the October SSI payment will arrive.
This makes September a total of 6 separate Social Security checks mailed in the month of September. But there are not 6 different mailing days, but 5 different days. This is because the pension payment for pre-1997 retirees arrives on the same day as that month’s SSI.
