The Disability payment could arrive later to some Americans

Disability payments are one of the most important sources of income for thousands of citizens in the United States. Social Security offers these monthly payments to those who are unable to work due to a disability, and it is crucial that beneficiaries receive their checks on time. However, in May 2025, not all beneficiaries will receive their payment on the usual dates, as some will have to wait an extra week.

This type of delay is relatively common, but it is still an inconvenience for those who depend on these payments to cover their basic needs. In this case, the reason for the delay has to do with how payment dates are distributed when the month begins on a Thursday, which affects certain groups of disability retirees.

Although this change in schedule could cause some uncertainty, beneficiaries should know that their payment will arrive. Below, we explain which retirees will be affected by this delay and what dates they can expect to get their check.

Which disability retirees have to wait longer?

The group that will have to wait the longest to receive their payment will be group 2. This group includes retirees whose birthdays fall between the 1st and 10th of each month and who began receiving their benefits after May 1997. If you are part of this group, your payment will not be made at the beginning of May as usual, but you will have to wait until May 14, 2025.

The reason for this adjustment is that, due to how payment dates are distributed, those in group 2 will see their payment delayed because May begins on a Thursday. Therefore, the payment date is being adjusted so that it does not fall on the weekend, which could complicate the processing of payments.

Are there no other disability payments in May?

Although the payment for group 2 is delayed until May 14, it is not the only disability payment in May. Beneficiaries in groups 3 and 4 will also get their checks on specific dates, as follows:

  • May 21: Retirees with birthdays between the 11th and 20th of each month who began receiving their benefits after May 1997.
  • May 28: Retirees with birthdays between the 21st and 31st of each month, also with benefits after May 1997.

It is very important that beneficiaries be aware of these dates to avoid confusion. Knowing when payment will be received helps with financial planning and avoids surprises. It is also important to remember that not only citizens receiving disability payments are eligible for these checks, as all United States citizens can receive one of these benefits as long as they are part of the group of eligible beneficiaries.
