If you are waiting for a new Social Security check you have to wait until May

In the United States, millions of monthly Social Security check recipients get this payment as a critical source of income, so knowing the rules for when payments are sent is key. Many look forward to it in advance to cover basic needs like rent, food, or medicine. But when that payment arrives earlier than usual or there are no more deposits for the rest of the month, it’s normal to wonder if everything is in order.

That’s exactly what’s happening now, at the end of April. All scheduled payments have already been sent, so there will be no more Social Security money for the rest of the month. This doesn’t mean there’s a mistake or a problem, but rather that the payment schedule has run its course and come to an end before the month is over.

While this may seem confusing, it is a common occurrence when payment days are spread out over the first few weeks of the month. If you have already received your deposit this month, you have nothing to worry about. What follows now is to prepare for the May schedule, which will bring new payments for both Social Security beneficiaries and those receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Upcoming Social Security payments in May

The May calendar starts off with a bang. Right at the beginning of the month, several groups of beneficiaries will receive their checks again. The Social Security Administration has confirmed the dates, and as always, payments will follow the usual order based on both the date of birth and the type of benefit each person receives.

The first date marked will be May 1, a day reserved exclusively for those who receive SSI, a form of assistance for people with limited income and resources. One day later, May 2, retirees in group 1, meaning those who began collecting their benefits before May 1997, will receive their checks.

It is important to note that these payments are deposited directly into each person’s bank account, provided they have direct deposit enabled. Otherwise, the money may take a little longer to arrive, especially if another collection method is used.

Remaining Social Security payments in May 2025

After the first payments in May, the Administration will follow the usual order for sending money to other retirees. Here is the complete list of dates and requirements for the remaining payments for the month:

  • Wednesday, May 7: Check recipients in group 2, i.e., those who began receiving their retirement benefits after May 1997 and whose birthdays are between the 1st and 10th of the month.
  • Wednesday, May 14: Payment is made to group 3, consisting of those who also receive Social Security since after May 1997, but whose birthdays are between the 11th and the 20th.
  • Wednesday, May 21: It is the turn of group 4, i.e., those who began receiving their benefits after May 1997 and were born between the 21st and 31st of the month.

These payments are always distributed on Wednesdays, as usual, allowing the SSA to better organize the transfer of funds. If you have not yet received your deposit and you know that you belong to one of these groups, you should simply wait for your corresponding date to arrive.

Having a clear calendar and paying attention to your payment group is the best way to keep track of your benefits. And although April is over as far as payments are concerned, May will bring new checks that will once again make a difference in the lives of millions of people.
