SSI payments can arrive on very different days for United States Social Security beneficiaries. Despite the fact that we are facing a fairly stable calendar, it is very common for many SSI payments to arrive on different days to beneficiaries. In this case we can verify that in December the payments of this benefit are irregular, since we will get two of these checks.
First of all, it is good to be clear that regardless of all the irregularities that exist in the Social Security payment schedules, at the end of the year we will always get the same amount of checks. It is important to be clear on this, as there is no way to get an extra payment other than the 12 annual payments we can get from both SSI and retirement.
So with this in mind we can check to see what the December SSI payment schedule is, which is somewhat irregular and will also have an increase in the amount in the checks. This means that the maximum of one of these payments will not be $914, but a little more. This is undoubtedly great news for the beneficiaries of this benefit.
WHEN WILL I GET MY SOCIAL SECURITY SSI WITH THE ADDED INCREASE?
The 2024 COLA will become fully operational in 2024. Checks related to Social Security will see that increase by 3.2% starting with the first of the January 2024 payments. However, this could be a little different for one group of beneficiaries. And it is not necessary to have a Social Security retirement check.
If we have a Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment we will be able to get the check early with the COLA. In December, we will have two SSI payments and one of those payments will include next year’s COLA. These are the December SSI payments:
- December 1st. SSI payment for all recipients. Although it coincides with the payment day for Social Security for pre-1997 retirees, they are totally different payments.
- December 29th. Supplemental Security Income check for all Supplemental Security Income recipients. Whether or not we get the payment in this year 2023 will depend on the collection method we choose.
Thus, the 2024 COLA payment will arrive on December 29, 2023 for retirees who have activated Direct Deposit. This collection method is immediate, so we will not have to wait to cash the check.
WHY ARE THERE CHANGES IN THE JANUARY 2024 SSI PAYMENT?
The reason is very simple, and it is that the January 2024 SSI payment should be made on January 1st, 2024. But that day is a holiday, so the Social Security Administration advances the payment to the immediately preceding business day.
And that is the main reason why on the 29th day of December we will be able to have the SSI payment with the COLA already added from 2024. This means that instead of having a maximum payment of $914 we will have one of $943, just like the rest of 2024.
In the case of also collecting the December 1st payment, we will have two different SSI checks in this month. One with a payment of up to $914 and another with a payment of up to $943. Remember that each citizen has a different check, so not everyone collects the maximum payment.
