You might think then that there is some sort of mistake, which could actually be true. Tax agents are humans, so they might get something wrong, just like any of us when you file it. The best thing that you can do is to contact the IRS agency in order to find out whether they are right or not. They have a Treasury Offset Program or TOP which can help you deal with it.

All you need to do is call 1-800-304-3107 and they will certainly tell you the agency you need to talk to. Moreover, they can do more things for you. For instance, TOP will check if you are in debt. After giving them your personal details like name and taxpayer information, they will let you know if you are in their database as a debtor. You might have not paid the taxes that you had to.

Can the Federal Government take the necessary money from my tax return to pay the debt from taxes?

Federal Government can certainly get the money from your tax refund to pay any former tax debts you may have with them. There are many Americans that get less money for their tax refund than they expected. This is the main reason for those cases. They call it tax refund offset and they do it to make up for the debts that you have.

Once the TOP makes sure that there is a debt they will tell you about it. They will certainly inform you of the amount of money that they are going to take from your tax refund. They will be in charge of sending the money you owe to the corresponding place, It does not matter which government agency is, they will pay the debt to any of them.

Unfortunately, some debtors have to pay more than what they would actually get. In this case, the TOP will send all the money you were to receive for your tax return to the right agency. Otherwise, the remaining money will be in your account as soon as they send it. Believe it or not, the Internal Revenue Service claims to have millions of dollars from people who do not file their tax refunds, are you one of those?
