The Social Security Administration will be sending out the last of the United States retirement benefit checks for the month of May very soon. This means that after this check it will not send out another one. Because there are no irregularities in the schedule, the last of the payments the Social Security Administration sends out are for age or disability retirees. There is no extra Supplemental Security Income this month.
Therefore, whether we get the last of the checks or not will depend on whether we meet certain requirements. Remember that the Social Security Administration sends checks on different days to retirees. This system makes it much easier to send the money, and thanks to the staggered mailing of the retirement checks, there is no collapse and we can avoid delays.
However, there are still people who have not received their previous Social Security check. If this is your case, claim your benefit so you can receive it as soon as possible. It is important to claim your benefit before the next payment arrives, as this will speed up the process a bit. In any case, check the calendar to see what your payday is before claiming the payment, as you may have the dates wrong.
When does Social Security send the last check in May?
Throughout the month of May, the Social Security Administration sends millions of checks to retirees with an accepted benefit. In addition to this type of check, it also sends Supplemental Security Income to beneficiaries who have this other benefit. Not all retirement beneficiaries have Supplemental Security Income.
The next Social Security payment will be the last one in May and the Administration will send the payment on the 24th of this month. Therefore, receiving the money on the same day is possible. However, we must activate Direct Deposit. If we do not have Direct Deposit active, the money could take up to 3 days to arrive. In most cases the money takes a little longer, as there is usually a weekend in between.
Who receives the next retirement payment?
Only one group of retirees will receive the next of the Social Security benefit payments. To do so, they must pass two filters that set requirements. The filters are related to the year of retirement on the one hand and the date of birth on the other.
Year of application for Social Security
The Social Security Administration divides retirees into two large groups. The first of these groups is composed of pre-1997 retirees. This group would always be paid on the 3rd of the month, with some exceptions.
The remaining retirees, those with a post-1997 Social Security benefit, are paid on different days. The second, third and fourth Wednesdays of the month are the collection days for these beneficiaries. Therefore, the first filter to be able to collect the last check of the month is to have applied for retirement after 1997.
Birthdays
Each of the days that post-1997 retirees collect are configured from the birthday. In this sense, we have three collection days in May:
- May 10th. For retirees born between the 1st and 10th of the month.
- May 17th. Retirees with birthdays between the 11th and 20th of the month.
- May 24th. Social Security beneficiaries with birthdays between the 21st and 31st of the month.
This last group is the next group to collect Social Security, so the second filter is to be born between the 21st and 31st of any month.
