The tax season started last January for all citizens in the United States to start sending their tax return. The exact day this campaign started was January 23rd, 2023. The campaign has a total of 3 months and Americans have all that time to send their tax return and pay their taxes in a timely manner.
However, in some cases there are exceptions to the tax return payment schedule. If you live in a state where weather problems have occurred, you may have an extended timetable and you may be able to send your tax return later. This all depends on a number of factors, but what is clear is that the IRS wants to make it easier for all citizens to pay their taxes without problems.
Even so, remember that the sooner you send your tax return, the more advantages you have. Among others, you will be able to receive the tax refund sooner, in case you have to receive it. In addition, you will also have more time to pay the taxes if you have to pay them. Not only that, but if there are any problems with the documents you will have more time to correct the errors.
In which states can we send the tax return later?
There are a total of three states where we can send our tax return to the IRS later.
- Alabama. In this state there were many storms and tornadoes on January 12. For this reason, the IRS decided to increase the tax season calendar. However, not all Alabama counties will have this extra time to send the tax return.
- California. Many different storms also occurred in California in late 2022. This extended through much of January. Therefore, there are many counties within California that will have an extended tax season.
- Georgia. As was the case in the other two states, Georgia had several strong storms pass through during the previous month. There are eight counties in total that may send the tax return later.
So some of the counties in these states will be able to send their taxes until October of this year. This gives them much more time to complete this annual obligation.
When does the regular tax season end?
For the rest of the United States citizens, the tax season will end on April 18th. There is still plenty of time to send our tax return, but it should be done as soon as possible.
However, if you live in one of the states listed above, you are not required to wait until later to file your tax return. You can do it as soon as you have it, although you now know that you have more time to send it.
