The main reason is that the second Wednesday of the month falls on the 14th, causing a delay in the payment cycle and triggering financial stress for many recipients. For those born between the 11th and 31st, payments won’t arrive until May 21 or May 28, respectively.
This delay doesn’t mean benefits are being withheld or cut—just postponed. Retirees who began receiving benefits before 1997 already received their payments on May 2. Everyone else will get paid according to their birthdate, but on significantly later dates than usual.

- May 2: Payments for those who started receiving benefits before 1997

So, no payments will be sent out between May 5 and May 12, and those born after the 10th will need to wait an extra one to two weeks to receive their benefits. All payments are made via direct deposit.
