A growing trend among content creators in the United States is to scour stores in search of a dupe, a term that refers to second-brand products that offer similar quality to premium items, but at a much lower cost. In this case, a young woman bought a spray dye at Dollar Tree and shared her experience.
Vivian Tenorio has a show on YouTube, in which she mostly checks the quality of products sold on television. In that sense, she reviews items of different kinds, from cleaning products to aerosol dyes, as in this case. His channel has more than 500 thousand subscribers. And now he wanted to analyze this product.
The second-brand product that’s cheaper at Dollar Tree than at Target
Just a few weeks ago, Tenorio posted a video where he tests different products from Dollar Tree and compares them with their counterparts from top brands. This time, he put L’Oreal Paris’ Magic Root Cover-Up head-to-head against its dupe, B.Color’s Instant Root Touch-Up.
The price difference is significant. While L’Oreal’s costs US$10.99 at Target, its competitor from B.Color is US$1.25 at Dollar Tree. In other words, between the two there’s more than $9 difference. “That alone should make you drive to Dollar Tree and buy some,” he recommended.
Both products serve the same function. It is a spray that serves to cover roots temporarily and to hide gray hair in a matter of seconds, without leaving stains or sticky residue when it dries. The one from B.Color that Tenorio tested comes in three presentations for black, blonde and brown hair.
Unlike other content creators who show a dupe, but not its effectiveness, Tenorio placed two mannequins with wigs on his desk to see how good they were. He started with B.Color’s blonde and was automatically disappointed. “It’s a redhead,” he lamented and showed the result.
However, when she tried the brown and black she was amazed at the quality. “It looks very ’80s, I like them. The darker colors look amazing.” She then took the L’Oreal options in the same shades and compared results. At a glance you can tell how the products are similar in results.
The only recommendation he made about B.Color sprays is to watch out when applying them. As he showed, doing it too closely, without being cautious, can stain surfaces and also the skin.
