The finances of many United States citizens depend directly on Social Security payments. For that reason, some Americans do not have a very high standard of living. And the fact is that sometimes a retirement check may not be enough for all monthly expenses. This is where another type of payment comes into play that can supplement the retirement check.
Not only that, but there is a different payment outside of Social Security that can perfectly complement all retirement checks. If you think you are too low-income to qualify for both checks, pay attention to the amounts and requirements. If so, you could get up to $943 on one side and $291 on the other.
Social Security Supplemental Retirement Income Payments
The first of these checks to supplement your Social Security retirement payment is the Supplemental Security Income. This extra benefit provides a maximum of $943 to your beneficiaries. The check is paid once a month and beneficiaries who can get it will receive it at the beginning of each month.
However, not all citizens are eligible for an SSI payment from Social Security, since certain requirements must be met. These requirements are:
- Be age 65 or older or have a disability.
- Have a low monthly income, as well as low resources.
It should be noted that it is not mandatory to be retired in order to get this monthly Supplemental Security Income check. Disability retirees and those over 65 have access to the extra check, but also those Americans under those conditions who do not collect a Social Security payment.
The amount we get from this payment each month depends on our income. Each case is totally unique, so the SSA looks at each application individually. Knowing that the limit is $943 at least we can know that we won’t get more.
Another payment to supplement Social Security
In addition to the SSI payment, Americans can also request another check to supplement Social Security. This other supplemental check is SNAP and getting it will depend directly on the individual citizen’s situation.
The schedule of payments for this benefit is uneven depending on the State in which we live. Although the maximum check is $291, each American can get a different amount. Likewise, it is also good to note that the payment of this benefit comes to a government-issued EBT card.
It is not possible to use SNAP Food Stamps money anywhere. The money from this benefit is intended to buy food, so there are attached establishments. The good thing is that if we have this benefit to buy food we will not have to spend our Social Security for that purpose.
