IRS is sending new Stimulus checks

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has refunded $1,400 stimulus grants to about one million individuals in the United States. However, some taxpayers may still be unclear about whether they qualify for this money or if they need to do anything more to make a claim.

This refund is part of a pandemic aid program called the Recovery Rebate Credit. Even though the IRS processed most taxpayers’ payments automatically, there are still instances where taxpayers could not have received their payments and need to confirm their status.

Who can claim the $1,400 stimulus payment?

To be eligible for this refund, it is essential that the taxpayer has not previously claimed the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax return. The IRS identified those who did not claim the payment and, in these cases, automatically made the transfer via direct deposit or check by mail, using the information on file from the 2023 tax return.

According to IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel, the system automatically identified the appropriate receivers, thus these payments were made without requiring a revised return. Nonetheless, an individual can verify the status of the payment in their IRS account if they feel they should have gotten it but haven’t yet.
Depending on whatever missing payment they wish to claim, taxpayers who did not get the stimulus may be able to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit by filing a 2020 or 2021 tax return.

Claim for an IRS missing stimulus payment

To confirm whether the payment was sent, the IRS advises people to check their online account. To do this, they should access the “Economic Impact Payment Information” section, available on the Tax Records page.

In addition, the IRS sent out three types of notices to provide information about the stimulus payments:

  • Notice 1444: Indicates the first payment for the 2020 tax year.
  • Notice 1444-B: Shows the second payment for the 2020 tax year.
  • Notice 1444-C: Confirms the third payment corresponding to the 2021 tax year.

If a taxpayer feels they are eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit despite not receiving these payments, they can claim by submitting an amended tax return. This will ensure they get the money they are lawfully entitled to under IRS regulations.
