Social Security payments in the United States may be compatible with other benefits. We are talking about the retirement check payment. Other types of Social Security benefits may not be compatible. It all depends on each individual case.
If you have worked for at least 10 years and have earned 40 work credits, you can apply for Social Security. Although the benefit under these conditions is not very large, it is what we are entitled to. If we want a larger check, we must have better conditions prior to the application.
But regardless of the amount we have in our Social Security check, we can ask for other benefits. And we are talking about benefits related to a regular payment. Aside from that, there are other types of checks that can come into our pockets. These other stimulus checks are one-time and, therefore, have their own requirements.
Payments we can apply for other than Social Security
Within Social Security payments we can find several different categories. In this sense, if we have a check for retirement we cannot have another one like it. In other words, if we collect a disability retirement, we cannot get a widow’s or widower’s check. All the categories coincide in the monthly check, so we can only choose to get one of them.
But we can get other different payments. Each of these payments has different requirements and are compatible with each other. Therefore, applying for each of these payments can be very advantageous to our monthly finances.
The extra Social Security payment
Within the Social Security checks we find payments for retirement, disability and other reasons. But in addition to that there is an extra payment from the SSA that only some beneficiaries can get. This extra check is called Supplemental Security Income.
The payment of this benefit is only for Americans 65 years of age or older or citizens with a disability. It is mandatory to be in one of these two groups. If we are not in these two groups, we cannot get the check. Whether we are retired or not, we can collect both checks at the same time.
The maximum payment for this benefit is $943 per month in the year 2024. The payments of this benefit depend on the monthly income of each citizen. The other requirement to obtain this payment is to have a low monthly income.
Supplemental Security Income checks always arrive on the 1st of the month, with some exceptions. When the 1st of the month is a holiday or weekend, the Social Security Administration sends a check on the immediately preceding business day.
SNAP Food Stamps
In addition to the Supplemental Security Income payment, Social Security beneficiaries may request SNAP Food Stamps. This other payment sent by the USDA is only for the neediest citizens. If you have a low monthly income, either as a worker or as a retirement beneficiary, you can request this check.
The payment of this benefit depends on your monthly income. Also, the SNAP Food Stamps payment schedule is different for each State. Similarly, the limit on these checks is $291 per month.
A family can apply individually for this benefit. In that case, each member gets a different check depending on his or her individual situation. The payments are combinable with the other benefits, so we can get them without any problems.
