As reported by WFTV Channel 9, Apopka resident Krystal Darby had her access to Social Security Disability Insurance restored after spending months in an extremely precarious situation. Darby, 30, underwent vocal cord surgery that unfortunately left her with an artificial trachea for life. Because of his condition, he was unable to work, and in February 2023 he applied for Social Security to help him meet his day-to-day living expenses.
However, the initial response was negative, and Darby was forced to appeal the decision, a process that could take up to eight months, according to Social Security Administration (SSA) estimates. During this time, she faced several hardships, including the loss of her home and the possibility of having her vehicle repossessed. His mother, in an effort to support the family, went so far as to take two jobs to help cover Darby’s expenses.
Fortunately, after WFTV Channel 9 aired her story, the SSA finally reviewed her case and approved her for Disability benefits. In a message, Darby expressed her gratitude to those who supported her, including the news team, and noted that the financial support from Social Security will allow her to catch up on her car payments and ease the burden that has fallen on her mother in recent months.
