United States citizens who are on a specific list could lose their Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefit starting next month. This is because from one month to the next, Americans can stop meeting one of the requirements that grant this Social Security benefit.
In this regard, the Administration does not make exceptions, so if we stop meeting the conditions, we will no longer receive a monthly check for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), even if it is only for a short period of time. Each month we must meet all the requirements to get this or any other benefit.
But it is true that this particular benefit has very specific requirements. And with these conditions fulfilled we can cash the check, but if we do not fulfill them the Administration will cut off completely the remittance. In some cases we even have to send back money from previous months. Each situation is unique, so we must watch out for our actions.
WHO WILL LOSE THEIR SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME (SSI) CHECK?
To understand this situation we must first understand the requirements of this check. In the event that we want to obtain a monthly Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefit, we must meet two conditions. These conditions do not change and are always the same, at least in recent years.
The requirements to obtain the payment of this benefit are to be 65 years of age or older. Also, there is another category which is having a disability. Therefore, either because we are 65 years old or have a disability we can request payment of this check.
But in addition to that requirement there is another one. This other requirement is to have low income as well as low resources in general. And this is the requirement that could make us lose the benefit.
If we take into account that the 65 years of age resource may not change, as well as the disability resource for most Americans, the income resource may change quite a bit.
It is possible that at the time we apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), we may have a low income, so we will be on the eligible list. But if that situation changes, we may find that we could lose our monthly check. This financial help is only for the neediest Americans.
So if we are not on the needy Americans list we will lose access to the benefit regardless of whether we are 65 or older or have a disability. And that is why we must always report all of our income to the Social Security Administration.
The moment our income is higher than allowed we will lose our monthly Supplemental Security Income (SSI) check. However, after losing it, we may be able to get it back if our financial situation worsens again.
