Here is a list of some of the things we can do through Social Security’s My Account:
- Update personal information. Remember that if you don’t update personal information you could get into trouble. There are cases where a retiree hasn’t cashed a pension check because they haven’t updated their information. If you get married, divorced or move, update all the information directly.
- Check your checks. You can look at the history of your retirement or disability pension checks.
- Receive your Award Letter. The Social Security Award Letter is a very useful document and if you have lost it, you can request a copy.
- Estimate your future check. If you haven’t started collecting your Social Security check yet, you can estimate what your future benefit will be.
- Switch to Direct Deposit. Through this account you can activate the Direct Deposit option. Through this collection method, any Social Security beneficiary can receive the benefit immediately.

How do I access My Account?
You do not need to have a Social Security benefit to have My Account. In fact, users who are not yet collecting a benefit check can monitor what their payment will look like in the future.
Accessing SSA’s My Account is easy. All we have to do is register on the SSA’s own website. From there, we just need to provide our information and in just a few minutes we will have full access to control all the information. It is a very easy and quick process.
Is it mandatory to have My Social Security Account to collect a benefit?
Although thousands of citizens live a little scared with the idea that they do not know how to use My Social Security Account, it is true that it is not mandatory to have an account in this service.
However, it is a free service that offers all kinds of advantages to Social Security beneficiaries and to citizens who have not yet started receiving them. For that reason, making one of these accounts should be something to consider.
But it is not mandatory to have My Account to cash SSA benefit checks, so in case we have one we should not worry. Although for any process related to the benefit we will have to contact a local Social Security office and it will take longer to solve the problems.
