Seniors in the U.S. will experience some relief as $200 payments are issued later in the year.
Lawmakers in Onondaga County, N.Y., approved a plan that will transfer to seniors the money they spent paying bills during the pandemic, WRVO Public Media reports.
“When we see the cost of everything else go up, there’s not a lot of flexibility, even if you give them a small increase in Social Security,” said Peggy Chase, chairwoman of the Health and Human Services Committee.
In all, the assistance payments are expected to cost $5.5 million, which will be funded from the county treasury’s $200 million.
What are the requirements to collect the $200?
As long as you are registered for the extended STAR property tax exemption for the 2022-2023 school year, you are eligible for a $200 check.
The requirements for the tax exemption are as follows:
- Approximately 27,500 households receive benefits under the program.
- STAR exemption forms can be downloaded online.
- You need to fill them out and complete them with an advisor.
- It is unclear if you will qualify for a $200 check if you are not yet enrolled.
- The county did not respond to The Sun’s request for comment.
- According to syracuse.com, the checks will be issued in December.
Other payments going out
Meanwhile, states across the country are sending tax refunds to Americans to help offset inflation. The state of Indiana has sent 1.5 million refunds to 2 million residents.
According to The Sun, about 4.3 million Hoosiers will receive a payment, about 85% of the state’s adult population. The payments, due in the summer, are $125 per person and $250 for married couples. In Colorado, residents who filed their taxes by June 30 should receive their refund checks by the end of August.
If you file your tax return after this date, you can expect to receive your money in January. The checks are worth $750 for individuals, while the amount for joint filers is $1,500.
About 3.1 million residents are lining up to receive the money, according to Gov. Jared Polis. In addition, Hawaii residents will receive a one-time tax refund next month.
- Those who earn less than $100,000 get a $300 refund.
- If they cross that threshold but don’t reach $200,000, they get $100.
- Families with children could also get more money.
- For example, a family of four could get $1,200.
According to the Hawaii Department of Taxation, refunds are expected to begin in the last week of August.
And Connecticut is offering a child tax credit to eligible parents, but the application deadline is in a couple of weeks.
Households can receive $250 per child, up to a maximum of three. For example, families can apply for a maximum of $750. Applications for the credits will close July 31. Gov. Ned Lamont said he expects payments in August.
