In the United States, Social Security payments do not arrive on the same day for all beneficiaries. The Social Security Administration (SSA) uses a staggered calendar system that organizes dates based on certain personal criteria, such as the date the benefit began or the beneficiary’s birthday.

This distribution method allows monthly deposits to be spread out evenly throughout the month. However, it also means that some beneficiaries have to wait longer between payments, depending on the group they belong to.

One of the groups most affected by this delay is those who have been getting benefits for the longest time. In May, for example, a group of retirees got their check at the beginning of the month, but they won’t see their next payment until the first few days of June.

This situation is not a mistake or an extraordinary delay: it’s part of the SSA’s official schedule. That’s why it’s important to know which group you belong to and when to expect your next payment.

Which retirees receive Social Security in June?

The June check issued by Social Security on the 3rd is for Group 1 beneficiaries, meaning those who began receiving benefits before May 1997. This group gets their payments before anyone else, as long as the 3rd of the month is a business day.

In May, the payment for this group was issued on Thursday, May 2, since the 3rd fell on a weekend. This causes a longer gap between one check and the next. In this case, the wait is extended to Monday, June 3, which is when the cycle resumes with the deposit for the new month.

Group 1 includes those who:

  • Started receiving Social Security before May 1997
  • Are registered as primary beneficiaries with active benefits

This group has a fixed date: the 3rd of each month, unless it has to be brought forward due to calendar issues. This means that, as happened in May, there is a longer pause between two consecutive payments.

As this is a pre-established system, this difference in payment dates cannot be changed. Therefore, beneficiaries should take this into account when planning their expenses. Although the benefit is guaranteed, the deposit will not be paid until Monday, June 3.
