Hundreds of families in southwest Florida grappled with three hurricanes during this season. Many of them ended up without power in their homes, causing their food to spoil and their food reserves to dwindle. However, help for these people arrived through the D-SNAP benefit: the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in Florida.
“Our Department has been working diligently to provide support and resources to individuals and families affected by Hurricanes Helene and Milton”, said Secretary Shevaun Harris in a press release.
“One of the services the Department offers after the storm is funding to replace food lost after the hurricanes made landfall through the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP), and we are pleased to continue offering both a telephone and in-person application process to ensure people have multiple options to apply.”
Who is eligible for D-SNAP?
Those who apply to join the program must not be currently receiving regular food assistance. Additionally, future beneficiaries must have lived in a county declared a disaster area at the time of Hurricane Helene or Milton.
Furthermore, applicants must have suffered some disaster-related loss such as:
- Loss of food
- Damage to their home(s) or self-employment property
- Reduction or loss of income
- Other disaster-related expenses
