The United States Government offers different types of financial help to United States citizens. In this sense, seniors can get some extra money to be able to buy food, something very useful in most cases. Thus, citizens who are within the eligibility criteria can apply for this benefit and thus enjoy a very useful and convenient financial help.
But taking into account that it is mandatory to meet certain requirements we must keep in mind at all times that not all Americans can get this financial help. Also, this help from the Food Assistance Program is not the only one to be able to buy food. There is SNAP Food Stamps, which is a more general benefit and not only seniors can get it.
Food Assistance program for Seniors
In order to be eligible for one of these senior citizen’s financial helps, it is important to be at least 60 years old. This is one of the indispensable requirements, since this benefit cannot be applied for by other types of groups, not even citizens with a disability.
Knowing this, we can check the two main programs for senior citizens to be able to buy food, according to the official information of the official website of the United States Government:
- Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) – Provides coupons for fresh fruits, vegetables, honey, and herbs. You can use the coupons at farmers’ markets, roadside stands, and community farms.
- Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) – Provides a monthly package of healthy food. USDA distributes food to local agencies where you can pick it up. In some states, you may be eligible to have your food delivered.
Your state may not have this benefit, so you will need to apply for SNAP Food Stamps if you need financial help to buy food, since SNAP is available in all U.S. states.
Remember that in order to get one of these benefits you must meet two requirements:
- Be 60 years of age or older.
- Have an income less than 185% of the federal poverty income guidelines.
In order to apply for this benefit we must first check the possibility in our state and once we know that some of the benefits exist we can apply for the payment to buy food.
