Retirees age 62 who have a United States Social Security benefit will be cashing their check very soon. Some of them even already have their benefit in their bank account, although this is only true for one particular group. In order to get a good idea of the payday, it is important to know how the Social Security Administration divides the groups of retirees.
Each group of retirees receives their benefits on a different day of the month. The checks for 62-year-old retirees can arrive on the day of the first payment or on any other day of the month. It all depends on the Administration’s eligibility criteria for separating retirees into different groups. Depending on your personal information, you may receive your check on one day or another.
If you haven’t received your payment yet, you don’t have to worry. The money will appear in the next few weeks. Check the Social Security calendar and see which group you are in so you can mark the day you might receive your retirement benefit. Also, disability checks arrive on the same days. The important thing is to meet the eligibility requirements.

The first day the Social Security Administration sent out a check was the 1st of the month. This payment was for pre-1997 retirees. Therefore, if your benefit is prior to that year, the payment should already be in your pocket. Retirees after that year will have their check in the next few weeks.
The money for post-1997 retirees will arrive on the 13th, 20th and 27th days of September. Here are the exact days and requirements to cash your check on those days:
- September 13th. Social Security benefit payment for post-1997 retirees with date of birth between the 1st and 10th of the month.
- September 20th. Retirees born between the 11th and 20th of the month with a post-1997 benefit will cash check on this day.
- September 27th. Retirees will cash their check on this day if the benefit is after 1997 and the birthday is between the 21st and 31st of the month.
If we add Direct Deposit to all this, the check will arrive immediately on the marked days. If we do not have this collection method activated, the Social Security money will arrive on the days after those established in the calendar.
After that payment, retirees will have to wait until October to collect a new benefit. However, there is an extra Supplemental Security Income payment within the weeks of September. This extra payment arrives on the 29th of the month and is actually the October SSI payment brought forward due to a timing irregularity.
