Last week a judge sentenced a York woman to jail for 11 and a half to 23 months. In addition, also two years probation. This sentence is for keeping her grandmother in the freezer for 15 years while she collected her Social Security payments. Amazingly, all that time she was able to cheat the Social Security Administration and collect a large amount of money every month.
The woman’s name is Cynthia Black and she is currently 63 years old. Black has a conviction on charges of theft, receiving stolen property and abuse of a corpse. Black faces a lot of prison time for a felony she committed entirely intentionally, Judge Gregory M. Snyder assures us.

She won’t have to pay back to Social Security
After all this time stealing his grandmother’s Social Security money, Black will not have to pay it back. The total amount is estimated to be $99,357, although it is not known exactly. This woman will not have to pay back any of this money because the judge has so ruled. He cannot force her to return the money because it is a time-barred crime.
Since she doesn’t have to pay the money back, she will be able to keep it if she hasn’t spent it yet. What she won’t be able to dodge is jail time, as she will be behind bars for a while for the crime she has committed.
Therefore, the only thing she will have to do will be to go to prison for the stipulated time, in addition to the years of probation. So Black will be on probation relatively soon despite having committed several felonies, but the judge said at trial that he could not do anything else according to the law. He could not invent a new law for this case against Social Security.
She put his grandmother in the freezer in the basement
When his grandmother died, Black put her in the basement freezer to collect Social Security. As his attorney argued, he did so not because of financial difficulties, but because of issues related to mental illness. No one on the jury agreed with that premise because she did have financial difficulties. Her grandmother’s body was discovered, among other things, because two women paid a visit to the foreclosed apartment.
