Why can’t I get Supplemental Security Income in January?

Due to a scheduling irregularity, thousands of United States citizens will not get their January Supplemental Security Income

Supplemental Security Income will not arrive in January to some Americans

Although the United States Social Security Administration routinely sends out both retirement and Supplemental Security Income payments every month, sometimes calendar irregularities can change the situation. What we can know for sure, however, is that we will get the same amount of money throughout the year with or without irregularities.

It is possible that sometimes we will get one of the checks earlier or sometimes it could happen, although it is not very usual, that we receive it later. The important thing in these cases is that the money always arrives every month and this is a relief for United States citizens with a Social Security or Supplemental Security Income payment.

Therefore, knowing very well the calendar with the payments of each month is fundamental to organize our personal economy. A family collecting a monthly Social Security check or a Supplemental Security Income or SNAP Food Stamps benefit can have the payday information in advance. And that is very good news for American families.

WHY WON’T I HAVE SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME IN JANUARY 2024?

It’s not exactly true that we won’t have a Supplemental Security Income check in January 2024. The truth is that, like every month, the Administration will send out a check corresponding to this month’s calendar. This check will arrive early for thousands of Americans due to a calendar irregularity.

The main reason for not getting an SSI check in January is that January 1st is a holiday. And on holidays the Social Security Administration does not send checks to beneficiaries. For that reason, to avoid major delays, the check is sent on the immediately preceding business day.

And that day is none other than the 29th of December, that is, tomorrow. It is curious, moreover, that this check will include the extra COLA of 2024. Therefore, we can say that the maximum Supplemental Security Income on this day will be approximately $943.

The rest of next year’s January payments will arrive in the usual way. If we have activated Direct Deposit the payment will appear on the same day of mailing. Otherwise, the payment will appear a few days later.

Retirees will be able to collect their benefits on the 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th of January. Each group has its own payday and this is separate from Supplemental Security Income. We could cash only one of the checks or get both. It all depends on the benefits we have accepted.
