Living on just a Social Security check is possible in any of the United States, but sometimes it can be a big risk. The income from the monthly Social Security check is money that we will always have available, but it may not be enough to pay all the monthly bills.

Therefore, keeping in mind a number of items that can negatively change our finances while collecting a Social Security retirement check is important. We cannot forget any detail that can change our life during retirement.

Things to keep in mind to avoid running out of money during retirement

These are not the only items to consider, as there are many more that can change our retirement. However, they are very important and should be on the mind of anyone who has started collecting a Social Security check.

  • Take inflation into account. Every year inflation causes all prices to increase. Every single thing we are going to pay for with our Social Security check money is going to be more expensive year after year. Keep this in mind, because even with the COLA increase we can find ourselves with not enough money.
  • Spending on unnecessary things. It is very common for pensioners to start spending money on unnecessary things when they reach retirement age. It is fine to treat yourself once in a while, but we must be realistic. Paying a lot of money for things we don’t really need will make our Social Security check look a lot smaller than it is.
  • Give lots of gifts to family members. Remember, you’re retired, but that doesn’t mean you’re rich. Be realistic about giving gifts to relatives. It’s tempting to give nice gifts to grandchildren and children, but always use your head and calculate expenses wisely.
  • The tax return. Doing your taxes every year can be a great and pleasant surprise. However, it could be the opposite, so watch out for this. What we must do is to always send this tax return. Otherwise, we could have attorney problems.
  • Ask for a new loan or a new mortgage. Before applying for something like this, ask yourself if it is really necessary for you. We will be paying a large portion of our Social Security on this new loan and it may ruin our entire retirement plan, so watch out.

All in all, use the money you have wisely and don’t spend your Social Security check on unnecessary things. But don’t forget that some actions can make our retirement much worse if we’re not careful.
