Walmart has been involved in a viral video controversy in the USA. It was just a week ago when Shawn -@Soulforgepodcast, a TikTok user posted a video about a new shopping cart charge. It went viral straight away and it now has more than 10.7 million views. He complained that Walmart was going to charge one dollar for using their shopping cart.

This new measure was supposed to start on February 1, 2023. However, if you check the TikTok user’s profile, you can tell that he is in Ontario. Obviously, this measure is just for the place and country where they set it. Walmart has denied that this is happening in the USA according to Snopes. They contacted the company’s communications team to check if it was a fact.

Walmart claimed that the video was not recorded in the USA

As the video was recorded in English and it showed a shopping cart from Walmart many TikTok users were misled unintentionally and shared the video which spread rapidly. This event shows how important it is to check rumors and avoid their spread if they have not been verified. Lots of users and customers were outraged and disappointed.

In addition, there were plenty of comments from people who started to complain about the bad condition of these carts. Many people assured Shawn they would take their own bags and some mockingly said they would use their pockets instead.

Dollar coins are common in Canada

Some TikTok users were wondering how a dollar bill could fit in there, but the truth is that dollar coins are more often used in Canada. It is a common practice in Canada to pay for the use of shopping carts in some areas. As Walmart confirmed Snopes, it is a frequently used policy in Canada. In Europe, it is very common to insert a coin.

The thing is you can only take it back if you leave your cart in the shopping cart lane. You always get your coin back though. It is just a way to avoid laziness and carts being scattered around the store. Others prefer to have a system that blocks the wheels and prevents them from getting out of the premises. Check before you get outraged when watching viral videos!

How to find your nearest Walmart?

Regardless of whether you live in Canada or the United States, there is a very easy way to find your nearest Walmart. From Walmart’s own store locator, you can find your store.

And the best part is that this Walmart store finder can be used from your cell phone or from your personal computer. And, what’s more, it’s totally free. Discover your nearest store so you can save as many dollars as possible at this supermarket chain.
