People with diabetes living in the United States now have a new option to help them cope with their serious condition in the form of the POGO auto monitor. This blood glucose meter costs from $68 on the official product website and can also be purchased over the counter at Walgreens or at CVS Pharmacy facilities in the United States. The company behind POGO Automatic, Intuity Medical Inc., says the device uses “the first and only FDA approved 10 test cartridge technology.”
According to POGO Automatic One-Step Blood Glucose Monitor marketing information, the device requires smaller blood samples than typical competing measurement systems while eliminating separate diabetes test strips and lancets. All the required parts are built into the POGO Automatic system, which can perform a diabetes control test in seconds.
The user simply presses the blue button and a blood sample is collected and measured. The used strip and lancet are automatically replaced with a new set provided by the cartridge.
A replacement cartridge costs $ 32 for a bundle of five cartridges. For those who need to test once or twice a day, this 50-unit supply should be enough for a month-long testing period, and there are larger packages available (up to 250 tests – $ 160) for users who need to test more frequently during the day.
POGO Automatic can be synchronized via a dedicated application on the user’s Android or Apple smartphone for the purpose of continuous measurement and comparison of data. No prescription is required, and individuals with private insurance can only pay $ 59 for 150 tests (typically $ 96).
While similar blood glucose measuring devices already exist, such as Accu-Check Mobile, which uses a 50 test cassette, POGO Automatic is precise enough to be FDA approved and can be easily purchased over the counter or ordered online. While this particular solution is not completely painless, a blood sample size of as little as 250 nanoliters (0.25 microliters), which is required for a blood sugar reading, at least keeps management discomfort to a minimum.
