The Social Security Administration sends all beneficiaries in the United States a monthly benefit. If you have an accepted pension, Social Security will pay it to you on a Wednesday of the month. The exact day of payment depends on your date of birth. This never changes, so payments are always on the second, third and fourth Wednesday of the month.
In addition to this, the Administration is very punctual in this regard. It always sends the subsidy payments on those days. So in case you have a benefit and your payday is late, the reasons may be external to the Social Security Administration. Check, therefore, if one of the following reasons may be the cause of the delay in your payment.
Reasons why Social Security may be late
We have already mentioned that Social Security normally sends payments on specific days and in a timely manner. Therefore, it is important to know what day you will receive your benefit. Knowing this information, you will have no problem knowing whether your payment is late or not. The reasons for the delay may be the following:
- Your bank is holding your payment. This may be because your information is wrong. If your last name is not spelled correctly in the bank, for example, you will not be able to receive Social Security. Your details must match exactly to avoid these problems.
- There is an occasional delay. There may be a situation where there is a one-time delay. The Social Security Administration sends the money, but it can take up to 3 days for it to arrive. Even so, it can also be delayed a little longer for reasons beyond our control.
- Your information in My Social Security is wrong. If you’ve gotten married, divorced, or there’s some other change in your life, you need to update it. The SSA person account is totally free, so get one in case you don’t already have one.
However, remember to check the SSA payment schedule before you do anything else. You can complain to both your bank and Social Security about the delay. The first step is the bank, since it is in charge of giving the money to you directly. You can also activate Direct Deposit to avoid delays.
September payment schedule
Payments in the month of September are made, as usual, on the second, third and fourth Wednesday of the month. These payments are sent to different groups of people, which we will see below:
- Second Wednesday of the month: September 14. On this day the benefit is paid to persons born between the 1st and 10th.
- Third Wednesday of the month: September 21. The Social Security Administration pays the benefit to persons born between the 11th and 20th.
- Fourth Wednesday of the month: September 28. The last of the payments is for people born between the 21st and 31st.
For this reason, check the day that Social Security Administration sends the payment before making a claim to your bank or to the SSA itself.
